Modica, Ragusa

Tucked away in one of the most southern parts of Sicily, is this friendly steeply stacked medieval town with its spectacular Baroque cathedral.

It is divided into Modica Alta and Modica Bassa. The former is a remarkable ghost town – very much like Ortigia was 20 years ago. The latter forms the hub of the bustling streets in the town centre. The two are linked by steep stairways down to Modica bassa – not many attempt this walk the other way! Allow yourself some time to find your way around to enjoy the town at its best. A wonderful choice of restaurants and shops with a welcoming vibe await you.

Away from the town lies the sea. Due to favourable winds, it is particularly popular with wind and kite-surfers. Marina di Modica’s beach, 15 kms away, is a popular tourist haunt for the locals in July and August. Most shops and restaurants close down for the rest of the year leaving the place entirely to you. Surrounded by the the nearby towns of the Valley of Noto, you are not far from Noto, Scicli, Ragusa and Siracusa.
