Ortigia Syracuse

Ortigia, Siracusa

Siracusa is strategically positioned about one hour from Catania, ideal as a base to visit the south-east of the island.

The outskirts of modern Siracusa boast ancient Siracusa in the form of an Archealogical Park, also referred to as Neapolis. The heart of ancient Siracusa is a small island called Ortigia linked to modern Siracusa by a few bridges. The city is notable for its Greek heritage and was the home to many artists and philosophers.

Most of your time however will probably be spent on Ortigia. Historically, it is multi-layered with numerous must-see sites. It has that wonderful blend of history, seafront promenades, alleys brimming with baroque buildings interlacing crumbling decadence with tasteful re-birth. Quite remarquable is the Duomo di Siracusa, a Baroque cathedral built over the top of an existing Greek temple dedicated to Athena. The many outdoor cafés and restaurants are a sheer delight. The evenings are lively with bars and music where the local university students mix with visitors.

You can find spots in the heart of Siracusa for a dip in the sea. In fact you could use the platform right outside the hotel for diving. Some of the most beautiful beaches of Sicily are also nearby in the Nature Reserve of Vendicari.
